Leadership Camps

Leadership Camps at Camp Weaver are designed to help teens develop leadership skills while learning what it takes to be a great camp counselor. CIT – Counselor in Training and LIT- Leader in Training programs help teens explore their talents as individuals and in groups, while continuing to learn and grow.

Whether your camper has been coming to YMCA Camp Weaver for years, or are brand new to our camp, Teen Leadership Programs at Camp Weaver provide an excellent opportunity for teens to develop leadership and outdoor living skills. Our leadership programs provide a safe place to work on real life skills such as independence, time-management, and group work.

Chiefs Program – In Partnership with Day Camp

Camp Weaver offers leadership development in our Chiefs program. The Chiefs tribe in Day Camp is available for campers entering 8th and 9th grade (after the summer). This program is ideal for teens who enjoy camp activities and the social side of camp and who want to learn to take on more responsibilities. To register, use the day camp registration form at our Register Now Page. Each day camp week runs from Monday-Friday.

Leader in Training – Overnight Camp

Leader In Training (LIT) is designed to build leadership skills, group skills, self-confidence, and character. LIT is a two-week program for campers entering 10th grade. The first week of camp is spent in traditional camp activities for half the day, and leadership training for the other half. During the first week and a half the group (typically 10 to 12 campers) and their counselors will work on a service project for the betterment of camp. Campers will also learn a variety of outdoor skills, ranging from fire-building and outdoor cooking, to Leave No Trace camping ethics.

During week two, campers will begin planning and preparing for a four day, three night to Kings Mountain State Park and YMCA Camp Cherokee (which is located within the park itself) near Blacksburg, SC. During this week, Campers will cook their own meals and sleep in tents. No previous outdoor living experience is required for the program and sleeping pads, tents, backpacks, and cooking supplies will be provided for campers. The trip will include whitewater rafting at the U.S. National Whitewater Center and hiking at Kings Mountain State Park. In addition to two trained Camp Weaver staff, our campers will be joined by a trip guide from YMCA Camp Cherokee. Register for LIT Here

Counselor in Training – Overnight Camp

Our CIT program is available as a 3 week overnight session for campers entering 11th grade. We believe that these youth are the future of Camp Weaver. They are encouraged to work together to learn the skills needed to become positive role models, in both our camp and the community.

The first two weeks of our CIT Program are focused on intensive training in child care skills and our various activity areas around camp. During the last week of the program, CITs are placed into cabins with some of our very best staff serving as their mentors for the week. Our top scoring CITs will be among the first candidates that will be considered for staff the following year.

CIT is a three week program. It is mandatory for our CITs to stay-over for the first weekend of their session. The second weekend is not mandatory, but can be included for an additional fee. Please see stayover weekend trip destinations for more information.

Please note stayover weekend is not available between the last two sessions of Overnight Camp (the weekend before Camp Corral week).

This is what it looks like when your campers would like to attend a CIT session:

  1. Discuss with your child which session they would like to attend.
  2. Have the child complete the CIT application:http://campweaver.org/camp/leadership/citapplication/
  3. Once the application has been completed and reviewed, your child will be contacted to set up an interview via telephone or face to face during non-school hours
  4. Once the camper has submitted the application, you the parent can begin registering the camper for the session which would require you log back into your online account using this link:  https://campweaver.campintouch.com/v2/login.aspx
